« Germany’s Bavaria plans systematic border checks despite Schengen rules

Bavaria intends on introducing systematic checks on its border with Austria, according to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

This follows the detection of more than 10,000 “illegal entrants” by the state police in spot- checks during the recent G7 summit. The measures, if permanently implemented, would potentially clash with Europe’s Schengen rules on free travel.

Bavarian Minister President, Horst Seehofer, the leader of Angela Merkel’s CSU sister party, said that the problem is due to a “large-scale abuse of asylum [rules],” adding that “the European Commission should wake up and finally deal with the real problems, instead of interfering with our road tolls.”
