Le fond du problème, c’est que Washington, craignant les conséquences pour les marchés financiers américains, hésite à voir les banques centrales étrangères utiliser leurs réserves en dollars. Cela nous montre que le dollar n’est plus la monnaie de réserve attrayante qu’il était autrefois. Lorsque ce message sera bien compris, les autres pays redoubleront d’efforts pour trouver des alternatives plus attrayantes et facilement utilisables. La diversification des réserves risque alors de s’accélérer.

Barry Julian Eichengreen (born 1952) is an American economist and economic historian specializing in international economics, the history of the international monetary system, exchange rates, capital flows, the gold standard, the Great Depression, European integration, and related topics.
He holds the George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Chair and is Distinguished Professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1987 (chair since 1999). He is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).
